Starting at a New School The first day of school can be terrifying for some students. However, there are some important and helpful tips that can help start your journey on the right track, such as how to handle with those who are racist, how to face people who do the bullying, how to make friends in the classroom and extracurricular activities, and how to handle outside influences that impact on students’ learning. Starting at a new school can be challenging for some new students. New students may experience racism at a new school. As cited from the American Heritage College Dictionary1, racism has two definitions. The first is â€Å"the belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.† Second is â€Å"discrimination or prejudice based on race.† Arnold Spirit, Jr. grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation located just west of Spokane, Washington. As a young teenager, he knew that it would be a challenge for him, being the only Native American student besides the team mascot attending an all-white school but Arnold went ahead anyway. Arnold thought that learning from the white kids would benefit him so he determined to leave the reservation to go to Reardan, in order to get a better education.
